Our Philosophy.

At The Maples, we believe that tamariki thrive in an environment where relationships, care, education, and play are deeply valued. Guided by the principles of Te Whāriki, we create a nurturing, inclusive, and inspiring space where every child feels a strong sense of belonging, empowerment, and curiosity.

Genuine, respectful relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Through whanaungatanga and open partnerships, we build strong, trusting connections with tamariki, whānau, kaiako, and the wider community. We honour the unique identity of each child and celebrate the knowledge, language, and culture they bring.
We approach care as a holistic practice that supports each child’s physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing. Through kind and respectful interactions, we nurture empathy, independence, and responsibility, helping children feel safe, valued, and loved.
We provide an intentional, responsive curriculum that grows from the interests, strengths, and needs of our tamariki. Through child-led inquiry and hands-on learning, we encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for lifelong learning. Our kaiako are passionate facilitators who guide, extend, and celebrate each child’s learning journey.
Play is central to learning at The Maples. We value open-ended, imaginative, and exploratory play as essential for cognitive, social, and emotional development. Our learning environments are carefully designed to inspire wonder, joy, creativity, and deep engagement.
Our Nature School programme in Wairoa Reserve offers rich opportunities for tamariki to explore the natural world, connect with Papatuuaanuku, and develop a deep sense of kaitiakitanga. In nature, children are encouraged to take appropriate risks, solve problems, and build resilience through real-world challenges. These experiences ground them in the rhythms of the natural world and foster a lifelong respect for the environment.
We believe that learning extends beyond our centre walls. Our regular community trips allow tamariki to explore their local environment, engage with people and places in meaningful ways, and develop a strong sense of belonging in their community. Whether visiting local parks, libraries, businesses, or cultural spaces, these outings enrich our curriculum and strengthen children’s understanding of the world around them.

At The Maples, we are proud to nurture a vibrant, connected learning community where tamariki are cherished, whaanau are respected, and every child is supported to grow into their full potential - joyful, confident, and grounded in who they are.

Meet The Owners.

Meet Daynah and Tracey – a mother and daughter duo with over 20 years of combined experience in Early Childhood Education. For the past decade, they’ve worked side by side, creating three thriving centres built on love, care, and a strong sense of community. Daynah is a qualified teacher who has led and managed three of their centres for the past five years, while Tracey, a passionate and well-respected midwife, poured her heart into establishing Old MacDonalds, a cherished space for tamariki and their whānau.
As mums themselves, Daynah and Tracey understand what truly matters when it comes to nurturing children. They are now excited to bring their knowledge, experience, and passion to The Maples—a warm, welcoming home away from home for Te Awamutu families.
